Located on the banks of the Susquehnna River in Mocanaqua, Pennsylvania, The West End Mine was established in 1837. Because of the abundant coal in the region, a "patch town" was formed by the coal company and attracted a large immigrant population. It functioned as a working mine for 70 years.
